Avi spent over two decades as a high school English teacher and doctoral student in English Education — researching language, story, and how children learn to love both. He wrote plenty of things over the years, just never a picture book. Until a three year old arrived with very strong opinions about basketball and pizza.
Kathleen grew up in Ilocos Norte in the Philippines, where language, land, and family are inseparable. She carries those stories quietly. We write them down together.
Our family is a blend of two worlds. Two older children who came from the Philippines and made us a family. One little boy — Ravi, Little Spark — who arrived later and lit everything up. These books come from all of them.
We write in English and Ilocano. We write about basketball courts and mountain songs and Christmas lanterns and toddlers who think they're Harlem Globetrotters.
